I had no idea how bad Days' ratings were. Just wow, those numbers are not pretty!

The NCAA Tournament started last week but college basketball was very much a factor in some areas for these numbers. Conference tournaments were occurring causing many local preemptions ( primarily in the south like NC/VA). I saw others on other boards posting about this as well and, somehow, every year, people forget it's not just the first week of the NCAA tournament that causes preemptions but the conference tournaments do as well as some networks do carry some of those games in some pretty big markets that can cause some ratings decreases. GH and Days got hurt in these numbers and, coincidentally, they historically see strong viewership in the south and it's in the south where it seems the most preemptions occur for these conference tournaments. They even interrupt primetime in favor of basketball for these conference tournaments. I wouldn't worry. The networks know this and it is likely Days and GH will rebound in the next set of numbers even with the NCAA tournament as competition because the NCAA tournament games are only on CBS and the Turner stations whereas conference tournament games can be broadcast on many different networks, hence why preemption is more of a factor in these numbers. I get what you are saying about the various tournaments but shouldn't that make a ratings difference next week 3/15 to 3/19 ?
I am actually a big college basketball fan , been one since 1979 but I am not sure they same people regularly watching Days are turning in for the NCAA tourney . I know where I work people that never watch tv during the day watch the tourney so maybe that skews the ratings. Also is lot of the schools around here are on Spring break the next few weeks so I can see that playing some part in a ratings decline.

Yep, Days was off Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at the normal time here in NC because of the ACC Tournament.
Not saying this made a difference, but it could have been a factor.

No because the conference tournaments played out during the wk of 3/9-3/13. The wk of 3/15 will feature numbers that could be affected by the NCAA Tournament.
The difference between the conference and NCAA Tournament is critical here because conference tournaments are broadcast on multiple networks. For instance, where I live, my local NBC affiliate has a deal with the ACC conference to broadcast ACC games. Now, the ACC tournament games are not broadcast on my NBC channel in my market but I do know in some markets (particularly in the south) that happens. Some markets may feature games on CBS or ABC affiliates. In some markets, those games may not be on broadcast networks at all but, rather, ESPN or some other sports station. Conference tournament broadcasting rights are very much a regional thing (despite being broadcast on ESPN and other major sports channels in many regards) and that is why the week of conference tournaments often sees ratings decline for soaps and some primetime shows because there are scattered preemptions and it all depends where you are. This is why some are not even aware this kind of thing happens unless they live in a market or know of someone that does where it happens every year.
The NCAA tournament ONLY airs on CBS, TBS, TNT, and Tru TV. No other stations. Therefore, outside of CBS soaps, no one is preempted for those games and CBS only preempts the CBS soaps the first two days of the tournament because it ends up solely in primetime the next week. NBC and ABC see varied results when competing against the NCAA tournament. I recall years when NBC and ABC soaps saw some pretty good increases against the tournament and some years where they didn't. It depends. Not everyone watches basketball. I do believe that what happens with NBC and ABC against the tournament may depend on other factors like how many colleges were in the midst of spring break and other things like that.

Thanks for the Interesting! info! Where I live our conference tournament is on the cable sports network so it never preempts Days or any of the soaps.

I wonder what kind of plans (if any) NBC has for advertising the 50th and the big returns. If ever there were a time to go all out, this is it.
